Disclaimer: BMW flew us to Barcelona first-class, put us up in a moderately swank hotel that smelled roughly of natural gas, and fed us to the gills on mostly great Spanish fare. Rest assured that's done nothing to taint our views.
Well, it shines once you turn off all the electronic nannies, anyway. With the sport control setting in Sport+ mode, the eight-speed automatic transmission comes alive--to a point--the throttle response sharpens, and the traction control is disabled. But dynamic stability control, or DSC, remains active.
DSC is great on a wet road. It's not great at all on a track. It's constantly grabbing the brakes on a wheel here and there, trying desperately to straighten a very slightly sliding car out when all the driver's trying to do is get it to turn. It fights you. But hold down the traction control button to defeat DSC, and the car is freed from its electronic prison.

After languishing in mediocrity for far too long, the 2013 Chevrolet Impala can't come soon enough, and our shooters managed to snag a camouflaged prototype – both inside and out – for the first time.
Based on the long-wheelbase version of the Epsilon 2 platform, the reimagined Impala is set to be powered by a choice of either GM's 3.6-liter V6 or its recently revealed 270-horsepower, turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder. An eAssist version is also likely to be offered soon after its debut.
Inside, we get a glimpse of a reworked interior that's more plush than the current model, complete with leather dash and trim, tasteful aluminum accents and a sizable nav screen front-and-center.
The exterior is harder to gauge, but the ride height is noticeably lower, the roof and windshield more raked and the front fascia has taken on a pointed, Camaro-esque shape. We should know more in the coming months before Chevy takes the wraps off in the first half of the year.

In our recent drive of the outgoing, first-generation Bentley Continental, several of us expressed the desire, perhaps naïve, that the new Conti GT might have its engine in a different location than in front of the front axle. What, did we think they were going to wedge that W-12 into the back seat? Silly us. There's simply no getting around the fact that the Conti GT has been, and will continue to be, a short-nosed car that's packing a lot of hardware into a very small space. And, as Dr. Franz-Josef Paefgen, Bentley's patrician chief, explains, if they were to mount the engine on top of the axle, the car would have a very high center of gravity.
Wait, we said, when the all-new, twin-turbo, 4.0-liter V-8 arrives in late 2011, surely it will weigh significantly less and therefore constitute much less of a lump hanging off the front end of the car, right? Not so fast, advises Bentley's longtime chief engineer, Dr. Ulrich Eichhorn. "Our W-12 is already one of the lightest and most compact twelve-cylinder engines in the world," he tells us during the global media preview of the new Conti GT. "The 4.0-liter V-8, which we are developing with Audi, will not weigh that much less."
The W-12 is certainly grand. The Bentley guys are enamored of torque, not high revs, and although the last Conti GT wasn't lacking for it, Eichhorn's team massaged the 6.0-liter twin-turbo W-12 for another 37 lb-ft, for a total of 516 lb-ft. Horsepower is up marginally as well, to 567 hp. To access the endless stream of lag-free torque, all you have to do is mash your right foot, grab the beautifully stitched steering wheel, and hang on. Sure, there are steering column-mounted shift paddles, but they're too far away for easy grabbing. Yes, you can shove the gearshift lever to the right, into a plus-or-minus gate, and shift for yourself that way, but such efforts seem largely superfluous. The reason you have a car with maximum torque available all the way from 1750 to 5200 rpm is so you can just mash-and-go.

Land Rover's new DC100 concept vehicle is due to make its debut at the 2011 Frankfurt motor show, with the manufacturer also confirming that a new Defender is anticipated for 2015.
The DC100 concept will be building upon the existing characteristics of the car and it is hoped that the concept will act as a catalyst for debate concerning the future of Defender models.
The design team is headed by Gerry McGovern, Land Rover's director of design, who says, "This isn't a production-ready concept but the beginning of a four-year journey to design a relevant Defender for the 21st century."
John Edwards, global brand director at Land Rover, explains that the manufacturer wants to engage with existing customers to finalise the details of the new vehicle as part of their plans to direct the future of the Defender.

Hyundai has priced the new 2012 Genesis for the US. The luxury saloon is tagged at $34 200 for the entry level powered by a 3.8 liter V6 with 338PS (248 kW) and 394Nm (291 lb-ft) of torque.
The 2012 Hyundai Genesis powered by the 4.6-liter V8 with 390PS and 439Nm (324 lb-ft) will carry a price tag of $44 500.

It features some modifications like revised front and rear bumpers, a new grille, aggressive side skirts, and brushed aluminum window trim. There are also new Hyundai headlights, LED daytime running lights, and restyled taillights. It is a complete facelift ot the previous model.
The 5.0 R-Spec with the mighty V8 returns satisfying 17mpg in the city and 26mpg on the highway. The smaller 4.6 liter V8 has the same fuel consumption and the “tiny” 3.8 liter V6 returns up to 29mpg on the highway.

2011 Audi A1.

Audi's smallest car may not be making the trans-Atlantic swim, but we're entitled to a little green-eyed ogling of the hotter S1 version of the 2011 Audi A1, spied testing almost completely undisguised in these photos. The peppier S1 is expected to make its debut in Europe in the coming months, most likely following a debut at September's 2011 Frankfurt Auto Show.
Contrary to previous reports, our spies tell us it will only be available in front-wheel drive--no quattro for you! The 2011 S1 is still expected to get a 180 horsepower 1.4-liter TFSI engine with a seven-speed S tronic dual clutch gearbox. That should be enough for some serious fun with a proper suspension and the A1's minimal dimensions. Acceleration should be in the under-six-second range to 60 mph and top speed will likely reach an electronically controlled 155 mph.
In terms of appearance, the S1 looks rather like an S-line A1, though Audi may be holding back on the aggression a bit to save some money and keep the S1 from stepping on the A3/S3's toes.

Unique wheels, a freer-flowing exhaust, aluminum gear inside, and upgraded interior materials will also add to the S1's attraction over the base car. All in all, it will be yet another very interesting front-drive hot hatch for Europe. If Audi does ever decide to bring the A1 over, the S1 might just come with it--provided we can be relied on to pony up the cash for a premium/performance compact.

At the Fuel Cell & Hydrogen Energy 2011 event which took place this weekend in Washington, Hyundai Motor America has presented publicly its next-generation hydrogen fuel cell ride, the Hyundai Tucson ix Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle (FCEV).
Fitted with Hyundai’s third-generation FCEV – 100-kilowatt fuel cell system and two hydrogen storage cylinders (700 bar), the Tucson ix FCEV delivers substantial improvement in the fuel efficiency, a 76-per cent improvement over its predecessor and more than 400 miles on a single fueling.
Dr. Tae Won Lim, Managing Director of Hyundai Motor Company’s Fuel Cell Vehicle Group shared: “We are excited to share the latest in Hyundai’s fuel cell technology. After several years of testing, we have identified ways to maximize fuel efficiency without compromising driving experience and powertrain range. We hope to continue this momentum in finding ways to better fuel cell technology and performance.” Besides the enhanced fuel economy levels, the new Hyundai addition also benefits a more compact power source, 20–per cent smaller in comparison with the previous system via modularization of bulky parts in the fuel cell system including fuel cell stack, balance of plant (BOP), inverter and high voltage junction box.

Hyundai plans to make a limited supply of the Tucson ix FCEV in 2012 and to start a series manufacturing in 2015.

2011 Jeep Compass will hit the UK market on 15 April. It is priced at £16 995 for the entry version, but the price can go up to £23 995 for the top-of-range model.
Compass will be offered in either two or four-wheel drive version. This is the first SUV from the company, which will be available in two-wheel drive and it is specially aimed to the hatchback owners who want to trade up. These buyers don’t need four-wheel drive, but want the styling, image and practicality of a Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV). However, the 4×4 version will please the off-roaders with its improved quality of the interior and exterior inspired by Grand Cherokee.
There will be four trim levels, with 4×4 Limited and 70th Anniversary versions on sale this month. The entry-level Sport and Sport+ versions will join the range in August.
The engine range includes two petrol and one diesel. These have four power outputs and offer significantly improved performance and economy over the engines they replace.
The Limited and 70th Anniversary models will feature a chrome exhaust tailpipe and sit on new 18” alloys. The Sport and Sport+ come with smaller 17 inchers as standard.
2011 Compass comes with cruise control along with backlit switches for the door handles and locks, power mirrors and windows as standard. The safety is granted by active front headrests, and next-generation multi-stage front airbags with side curtain front and rear airbags as standard.
The automatic climate control is also standard, except the Sport which features manual air-conditioning. Front seat passengers sit in sumptuously padded bucket seats, covered in leather with accent stitching in the Limited and 70th Anniversary models, premium cloth in other versions. A six-way power adjustable driver’s seat and heated front seats are standard in the Limited and 70th Anniversary.
Sport and Sport+ models include a Media Centre CD player and MP3 compatibility, while the Limited and 70th Anniversary add a six CD system. All models have four speakers and an audio jack for connecting MP3 players. Owners of Sport+ models and above have a USB socket and can connect their mobile phones and use them handsfree with Uconnect Bluetooth.
The SAT NAV is available as an option on Limited and 70th Anniversary versions. It includes a 30GB HDD and a 6.5” touch screen.
The new 2.2-litre CRD turbo diesel engine has either 134BHP or 161BHP and 320Nm available from just 1400RPM.
The petrol engines are either 2.0 or 2.4-litres. Both feature dual Variable Valve Timing on the twin overhead camshafts. They deliver more power and offer better fuel economy and smoother, quieter operation.
The gearboxes are 5-speed manual for 2.0 litre petrol, 6-speed manual for the 2.2 diesel and the 2.4 litre petrol is available with the CVT2 Continuously Variable Transmission.

The new car will be “positioned below the current Tiburon,” said John Krafcik, acting CEO of Hyundai Motor America. The car is expected in 2011.
“It will have a lower price point, kind of eco sport positioning, where it is not going to be all about performance,” he said. “It is going to be very fuel efficient. It is going to be stylish, a real nice complement to the Genesis coupe.” The car will share a front-drive platform with the Hyundai Accent and Elantra, Krafcik said. It will have a 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine. The name Tiburon likely will be dropped.
The Tiburon was a four-passenger coupe, last produced for the 2008 model year. Four- and six-cylinder engines were offered. The 2008 Tiburon had a base price of $17,945, including shipping. Hyundai sold 14,073 Tiburons in 2007, the last full year the car was offered in the United States.
Krafcik said the new car’s styling will have a lot in common with the Veloster concept, a sporty four-passenger coupe.

Hyundai has garnered quite a bit of praise with its all-new 2011 Sonata sedan, with its most recent accolade being named to the finalists of the North American Car of the Year. In addition to the naturally aspirated and turbocharged versions, the Korean automaker is offering up the eco-friendly Sonata Hybrid with tweaked styling and the ability to achieve up to 35/40 miles per gallon, city/highway. The first Sonata Hybrids will go on sale this January, and the automaker has just announced that the car will carry a base price of $25,795 (*not including $750 in destination charges).
In addition to the more efficient powertrain, the Sonata Hybrid comes standard with things like LED headlight accents, LED taillamps, fog lights, iPod/USB connectivity, Bluetooth and automatic headlamp control. Adding the $5,000 premium package adds things like a panoramic sunroof, 17-inch alloy wheels, satellite navigation, a rear backup camera, HD radio, leather seats and an Infinity premium sound system.
Compared to its American rival, the Ford Fusion Hybrid, the Sonata undercuts the Ford's price by just over $3,000, though the Blue Oval's claim to fame is its 41-mpg city fuel economy number. The Jeep Grand Cherokee is no stranger to diesel power, though the last we saw it here in the U.S. was in 2008. Unlike the previous Daimler-sourced unit, the next diesel in the Jeep Grand Cherokee will be built by VM Motori. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like we'll be getting it here in the U.S. this time.
Chrysler today officially announced the Jeep Grand Cherokee will get its diesel addition at the Geneva Motor Show in just over a week. It's not the first time Jeep has sourced an engine from the company: the 1999-2001 Grand Cherokee used an inline five-cylinder diesel from VM Motori in some foreign markets, and other Jeep vehicles have used VM Motori mills over the years as well.
Rated at 241 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque, the new engine gains 10 percent more power and 8 percent more torque than the previous Grand Cherokee diesel, and it manages a combined European rating of 28.3 mpg.
Whether this engine will make it to the U.S. at any point in the future--right now it's only for "Europe and other diesel markets"--remains to be seen. Here's hoping it does, as the last Grand Cherokee CRD was a fun, efficient machine. It would fare even better in the vastly improved garb of the latest WK2-generation vehicle.
With Chrysler's new Italian connection through Fiat, the choice of VM Motori for the next Grand Cherokee diesel makes sense again; VM Motori is based in Cento, Italy, not far from the homes of Ferrari, Lamborghini, Maserati, and Ducati. Earlier this month, Fiat Powertrain Technologies purchased a 50 percent stake in the company. The other half is owned by General Motors.

Although it's still unconfirmed at this point, Pontiac is pretty much guaranteed to get at least one muscle car from the prolific rear-drive Zeta platform (officially, Global Rear Wheel Drive Architecture) by 2010.
The first fruit of Zeta loins for Pontiac is the 2008 G8 sedan, which will replace both the long-departed Bonneville and the current Grand Prix early next year. The G8 will be exported from Australia, where the Aussies engineered the RWD family.
As for a second Zeta for Pontiac, Hopson confirmed the brand has been kicking around "heritage" names, including Firebird and GTO, for a future muscle car. Although either "can be done" relatively easily, we don't expect Pontiac to do both. Furthermore, although a Firebird would seemingly be less expensive to produce if it shared—as it always did—its body stampings and many interior components with the Camaro, we suspect Pontiac is leaning toward the GTO.
Thank (or blame) Bob Lutz, GM's deified product guru, for that. He has asserted that the days of product sharing and badge engineering are more or less over and has stated emphatically that no carbon copy of the Camaro will make it into any other GM-brand showroom. After the brand changed their name to Toyo Kogyo, Ltd. in 1927. the first model, the Mazdago, a uniquely designed open wagon that combined elements of a motorcycle and small pickup truck using three wheels was developed. Founder Jujiro Matsuda chose the term "Mazda" in honor of the Zoroastrian god of good and light. Further production of a fleet of vehicles followed, but Mazda instead had to redirect its efforts towards Japan's participation in World War II, essentially halting the emerging brand's momentum.

1960 finally saw the arrival of Mazda's first legitimate entrant, the R360. A two-door coupe, the R360 would provide the template for what Mazda vehicles would be known for: compactness, efficiency, and affordability. Other models such as the Carol and the brand's line of B-series pickup trucks soon followed. The US began importing Mazda models in 1970, with the first one to reach American shores being the RX-2, which would give way to the 616. The '70s were an ideal time for Mazda to establish itself stateside, as the oil crisis proved to be a perfect time for American car buyers to be introduced to the brand's fashionable, fuel-efficient lineup. But despite its strong roster, Mazda had been struggling financially. Car news: Maybe the 2010 Historics won't be so different after all. Last week, the day after the Monterey Historics concluded, founder and producer Steve Earle announced that he and his company, General Racing, would no longer be producing that well-loved event. But on Thursday, in an interesting change, Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca announced that Earle will be one of five selection-committee members planning next year's Monterey Historics race. The selection committee will chose which marques, classes and cars will race at the storied track on Aug. 13-15, 2010. There was no mention made of plans for 2011 and beyond. The other four members of the selection committee are Amelia Island Concours founder and chairman Bill Warner, racer and race-car restorer Bruce Canepa, longtime automotive PR guy and former journalist Jay Amestoy, and well-regarded automotive writer/photographer John Lamm. Earlier this year, on June 22, officials of another General Racing event, the Coronado Festival of Speed in San Diego, announced that the Historic Motorsports Association would be running that show this year. The Coronado Festival of Speed will take place on Sept. 26-27 at Naval Air Station North Island in Coronado, across the bay from San Diego. Earle's General Racing will still produce the Wine Country Classic, another race for historic automobiles, at Infineon Raceway in early June 2010.
